FCP 8
As posted at http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/22/new-final-cut-pro-is-real-and-its-spectacular-and-its-expected-spring-2011/

According our very own people familiar with the matter, a small group of video editors were on the Apple campus recently in order to preview the new version of video editing software, which is in the same space as Avid and Adobe Premiere. Apparently Apple is still putting the finishing touches on “the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago” and wanted pro user feedback. Emphasis on “pro.”

Meanwhile, everyone is going crazy about the Supermeet reallocated to Apple.  And if you missed it too, Scott Simmons rant of a post at Studio Daily.

I believe the new FCP will be the biggest story of NAB, period.  Even though I can’t wait to hear what the surprise from RED is…  Stop hating on apple and wait to see what we get.

I agree that the “new and improved” FCP 7 sequence tab colors was nothing short of revolutionary just like the iPhone. And then like the iPad.  And then later, the iPad2. Revolutionary.  Well maybe not, but still part of a step forward.  I can only assume that will continue.

Seriously though, all I really want is a way to somehow really utilize multiple computers over Xsan.  Not just via Compressor and Qmaster, I mean really actually utilize the massive investments many companies have made.  Not gonna happen?  Fine, I will settle for a FCP that actually uses all its memory and processors on the host machine.  Somewhat actually speed up post production.

But besides that, just make it work.  The truth is that Media Manager is better than it used to be.  But things like round-tripping to Soundtrack Pro is annoying, see Adobe’s “Dynamic Link”.  Maybe being able to set markers on capturing footage would be nice for those long weekly live ingest sessions on Tosh.0.  Either way, moving forward will be welcome.

Maybe some insight on the direction of Thunderbolt?  Can’t we ingest multiple video streams on a single machine if the I/O and the disk array(SAN) is fast enough to keep up?  AJA iOHD(perhaps) over Thunderbolt would be sweet.  Maybe that could write ProRes to CF cards like KiPro, maybe?

I do expect something visually different.  We might take a step toward more contextual interfaces.  Less windows/buttons/etc. more visual real estate.  Seems like the Apple way, no?  How many features on the interface do you never use day-to-day?  Besides that, I would like to see background rendering.  That would really make executives happy too.

Either way, it is hard not to be excited.  After all, what has Apple presented that was an utter failure in the long run?  It isn’t about where we are now with the tools, but where they will take us in the future.
