 Editorial Case Study: Tosh.0

Tosh.o Set

Helium has provided equipment rentals, technical support and workflow design for the hit show Tosh.0 since 2009.

Building a workflow for a high profile, graphics heavy, quick-turnaround show for Comedy Central was a daunting challenge to say the least.  Over the last 6 years, the workflow has of course developed and changed.  The show originally started editing with Apple Final Cut Pro 6, but moved to Apple Final Cut Pro 7 soon after.  In 2015, under Helium’s supervision, the show switched to Adobe Premier Pro CC 2014 to utilize new formats and features.

Taking advantage of advanced NLE features like live to XSAN studio shoot ingest, multi-camera editing, broadcast ready sound mixing techniques and Adobe After Effects graphics round-tripping, the show proved FCP7 and now Adobe Premiere Pro CC are viable post production options for a complicated show.

But the workflow design doesn’t stop there.  The show incorporates a live studio set that integrates with post seamlessly.  This means a studio shoot is only a few clicks away from editing.  The show has probably taken almost every type of camera to air since 2009.  Originally, the show shot heavily with the Flip camera for small parody bits.  Since then, new cameras have been incorporated including GoPro Hero, Sony EX3, Sony F65, Panasonic Varicam, Sony A7S, Canon 5DMkII, iPhone to name a few and every type of internet video out there.

The show also uses advanced 3D tracking and live composites using Lightcraft Previzion. Helium has provided post supervision to bring these complicated shots to air.
